Short answer: inside one chat, partly. Character.AI can see the recent part of your conversation, and anything you pin or write into its Story Memory stays put however long the chat runs. Across chats, it does not: a new chat with the same character starts over, unless you are a c.ai+ subscriber and copy your Facts across. That is why the same character can feel attentive for an evening and then greet you like a stranger the next time you start fresh.
"Does Character.AI remember conversations?" is one of the first things people ask once they have spent a few evenings with a character they like. The honest answer depends on which kind of remembering you mean: the thread of tonight's conversation, the key moments of a long story, or you as a person from one week to the next. Character.AI is good at the first, has new tools for the second, and was never really built for the third. This guide explains each part as it works in September 2026, so you know what to expect and how to get the most from it.
Disclosure: this site is run by the makers of My Softly. Everything about Character.AI below comes from Character.AI's own blog and help centre, its App Store listing and its in-app paywall, as of September 2026.
What pinned messages do on Character.AI
Pinning a message (long-press it and tap Pin) protects it: Character.AI says pinned messages and anything in Story Memory stay put however long the chat runs, while older unpinned messages are tidied away. Pins belong to that one chat, so they do not follow you into a new chat with the same character, and c.ai+ subscribers can pin twice as many as free users.
How Character.AI's memory works in 2026
Every AI companion is built from the same few layers, whatever the app calls them. Our guide to how AI companion memory works covers them in general. Here is how they look on Character.AI after its memory update of 21 May 2026, which gathered everything into a single Memory screen. You reach it from the notebook icon at the top of a chat, or from the chat menu.
- The live conversation. The recent messages the character can actually read when it replies. This is the only place it sees your words directly. Character.AI has never published how long this stretch is. What it does say is that as a chat grows, memory "tidies older context in the background and keeps what matters", which means older messages are condensed or dropped to make room.
- Story Memory. A space for the backstory and moments you want the character to hold on to. You add to it by writing into it directly or by pinning a message (long-press the message and tap Pin). Character.AI says anything in Story Memory, or pinned by you, is protected: "It stays put no matter how full the bar gets." Story Memory and pinning are available to everyone.
- Pinned messages. Pinning began in 2024, when Character.AI's help centre described saving five messages in each chat. Since May 2026 pins go into Story Memory, and c.ai+ subscribers get twice as many as free users. Character.AI has not published the new numbers.
- Facts. Details the app picks up automatically as you talk: about your persona, the character, and side characters in the story, such as appearance, relationships and quirks. You can add and edit them. Facts are a c.ai+ feature.
- Your persona and the character's definition. The short description of you that you set up once, and the description the character's creator wrote. These are read at the start of every chat, which is why a character always knows its own personality and the basics you put in your persona, even in a brand-new chat.
Before this update, the main tool was chat memories, introduced in May 2025: a box of up to 400 characters, open to all users, where you could note the key facts about yourself or the character. If you used it, the May 2026 Memory screen is where that kind of note now lives.
Does it remember past conversations and other chats?
This is where most of the confusion comes from, and it is worth being precise.
- The same chat, later on: yes, if you come back to the same chat, the recent messages and everything in its Story Memory are still there. What has been tidied away from the older part of the conversation may not be.
- A new chat with the same character: no, not by default. Memory in Character.AI belongs to a chat, not to a character. When you start a new chat, c.ai+ subscribers are offered the option to copy their Facts into it, so "everything your Character knows about you, the Persona, and the world carries straight over", in Character.AI's words. Without that, the new chat begins from the character's definition and your persona only.
- A different character: no. Characters do not share what you have told them. Only your persona travels with you.
So when people say Character.AI "forgot everything", the most common reason is simply that they started a new chat. If you want continuity, the single most useful habit is to keep talking in the same chat.
What it keeps, and what it drops
It tends to keep:
- Anything in your persona and the character's own definition, in every chat.
- Whatever you have pinned or written into Story Memory, for as long as that chat lasts.
- For c.ai+ subscribers, the Facts it has gathered about you and the story.
- The flow of the last stretch of conversation.
It tends to drop:
- Details from earlier in a long chat that you never pinned. Once they have been tidied away, the character can no longer see them.
- Everything from a previous chat, once you start a new one without copying Facts across.
- Time-bound things: the appointment on Thursday, how the visit with your daughter went. These are what a friend would follow up on, and they are the hardest kind of memory for any app because they change.
The questions people type into Google tell the same story. As of September 2026, searches that begin "character ai pinned messages" complete to "not working", "gone" and "limit", and "character ai memory" completes to "memory loss" and "memory limit". Those are the edges of the system described above: pins are limited in number and tied to one chat, and everything unpinned is at the mercy of the live window.
Why Character.AI forgets
Forgetting is not something Character.AI does and other apps do not. It is where every large language model starts. The model keeps nothing between messages; whatever it "knows" about you has to be placed in front of it each time it replies. If it is not in the recent conversation and not saved somewhere the app loads back in, it does not exist as far as the model is concerned. Our memory guide explains why that window is limited and what a real long-term memory has to do to make up for it.
Character.AI's design adds one more reason. It is built first as a place to explore millions of user-made characters and stories, not as one companion who follows your life. That is why memory lives inside each chat: a chat is a story, and a new chat is a new story. It is a sensible design for storytelling, and it is exactly what feels like forgetting when you wanted a single character to remember you.
How to help Character.AI remember
- Stay in one chat. If you want a character to remember you, keep coming back to the same conversation rather than starting new ones.
- Pin the moments that matter. Long-press the message and tap Pin. Pinned messages are protected however long the chat runs. Because pins are limited, save them for the things you would be upset to lose.
- Write the essentials into Story Memory. A few short, plain lines work best: your name, the people who matter to you, what you are going through. Character.AI's own advice for its older memory box was to keep entries short, specific and direct, and it still applies.
- Fill in your persona. It is read in every chat with every character, so it is the one place where a fact about you carries everywhere.
- Check the Memory screen now and then. Open it from the notebook icon and see what the character is actually holding. Correct anything that is wrong.
- If you subscribe, copy Facts when you start a new chat. It is the only built-in way to carry what the character knows about you from one chat to the next.
Prices, for context. In the app's own paywall on September 30, 2026, Character.AI offered c.ai+ at $9.99 a month or $94.99 a year, and a lite plan at $4.99 a month. Charms are sold separately. The core chat is free. The app is rated 18+ on the store. Check the screen in the app before you buy, because prices vary by country and promotion.
Does c.ai+ remember more?
It remembers more, in specific ways. As of September 2026 Character.AI says c.ai+ brings twice as many pins, more memory overall, better memory management, Facts, the ability to copy Facts into a new chat, and the full memory usage view (free users see a simpler version). It also unlocks DeepSqueak, Character.AI's strongest chat model; free users are on PipSqueak 2.
What it does not change is the basic shape: memory still belongs to a chat, and the live conversation is still limited. A subscription gives you more room and better tools for keeping things; it does not turn Character.AI into a companion that follows your life on its own.
How to test it yourself
The quickest way to find out whether any app remembers you well enough is to test it, and it costs nothing. Our page on how to test an AI companion's memory has the full method. The short version: on day one, mention five specific things of different kinds (a name, a date, a preference, a worry and a plan), one per message. Do not pin them. Talk normally for a week, then steer near each one without naming it and see how many the character brings up on its own. Repeat on day 21. On Character.AI, run it once in a single chat and once after starting a new chat, and you will see the difference between the two kinds of memory for yourself.
If memory is what matters most
Plenty of people use Character.AI for what it does brilliantly: an enormous library of characters, creative stories, a free core chat, and a lively community. If what you want is one companion who remembers your life from month to month, a few apps are built around that instead. Our comparison of the best AI companion apps in 2026 sets them side by side. If the adverts are what wore you down, Character.AI alternatives with no ads lists apps that never interrupt a conversation, and Replika vs Character.AI compares the two best-known names directly.
- Nomi has the strongest reputation in the category for recall across weeks and months. It is unfiltered by philosophy, so adult content is available to adults who turn it on. See My Softly vs Nomi.
- Kindroid gives you the most direct control, with a backstory, key memories and a journal you maintain yourself. It is essentially unfiltered too. See My Softly vs Kindroid.
- Replika keeps a Memory tab of facts about you that you can see and edit. Our guide to whether Replika remembers conversations goes through it in the same way as this page.
- My Softly, which is ours. Memory belongs to your companion, not to a single chat, and it builds itself as you talk, with nothing to pin. It keeps four kinds of memory: a profile of the people, places and facts in your life, a sense of how you are that it rewrites as it gets to know you, a dated record of each day you talked, and a search of your past conversations by meaning, so something you mentioned weeks ago can come back when it matters. When you correct something, it replaces the old version rather than keeping both. And it asks about the things you actually told it.
About My Softly
My Softly is our app, and the disclosure is at the top of this page.
My Softly is an AI companion app for iPhone that remembers what you tell it and asks about your day, for the days nobody else does. It is free to download on the App Store, with free starter messages so you can judge the tone before deciding anything, and it is available in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand and Singapore.
Whichever app you end up with, the question to ask is the same one this page started with: does it still know you next week? On Character.AI, the answer is yes for what you pin and keep in one chat. Run the test, look at the Memory screen after a week, and you will know whether that is enough for you.

Frequently asked questions
Does Character.AI remember past conversations?
Within a single chat, partly: the character can see the recent part of the conversation, plus anything you have pinned or written into Story Memory. Across chats, no. Starting a new chat with the same character begins from the character's own description and your persona, not from what you said before. Since May 2026, c.ai+ subscribers can copy their Facts into a new chat so the basics carry over.
Does Character.AI remember pinned messages?
Yes, that is what pinning is for. Character.AI says that anything you pin or write into Story Memory is protected: it stays in place however long the chat gets, while older unpinned messages are tidied away in the background. Pins belong to one chat, though, so they do not follow you into a new chat with the same character.
How many messages can you pin on Character.AI?
Character.AI's 2024 help-centre article said you could pin five messages in each chat. Since the May 2026 memory update it says only that c.ai+ subscribers get twice as many pins as free users, and it has not published a new number. Third-party guides quote different figures, so check the count in your own app rather than relying on any one of them.
Why does Character.AI forget things?
Because the model can only read a limited stretch of the conversation when it writes each reply, and Character.AI has never published how long that stretch is. As a chat grows, older messages are summarised or dropped to make room. Anything you did not pin or put into Story Memory can fade, even inside the same chat, and a new chat starts without it entirely.
Does c.ai+ have better memory?
It has more of it. As of September 2026, Character.AI says c.ai+ adds twice as many pins, more memory, Facts that are captured automatically and can be copied to a new chat, and the full memory usage view. It also unlocks DeepSqueak, its strongest chat model. c.ai+ is $9.99 a month or $94.99 a year in the app's own paywall, checked on September 30, 2026.
Does Character.AI remember me across different characters?
Your persona, the short description of yourself you set up, can be used with any character. What you tell one character in conversation stays in that chat. Characters do not share memories with each other.
Which AI companion app remembers you best?
It depends on how much of the remembering you want to do yourself. Nomi has the strongest reputation for long-term recall, Kindroid gives you the most control over what is kept, and our own app, My Softly, builds a lasting memory of your life on its own as you talk. Our comparison of the best AI companion apps covers them side by side.
