My Softly vs Nomi

Two companion apps that both promise to remember you, built on opposite philosophies about what a companion should be allowed to say. Written by the makers of My Softly, with Nomi's strengths stated plainly.

A grey-haired man smiles at his phone over a coffee at a cafe window, a cobbled street behind him.

Disclosure: this page is written by the makers of My Softly. Nomi's strengths are stated as clearly as its limits.

Nomi is the broader platform: multiple companions on one subscription, group chats, voice calls, and no content filter.

Pick My Softly if you want check-ins that follow up on the specific things you said and stay out of your evenings, plain, warm conversation rather than a roleplay platform, and one companion who can be a friend or a partner, as you choose.

Still undecided? Both are free to start. Tell each one three small facts about your week, come back in a few days, and see which brings them up unprompted.

What Nomi does well

Nomi's strengths are real, and several of them are structural. If you are leaving Nomi for a particular reason, Nomi alternatives matches each reason to an app.

Where My Softly is different

My Softly is built for a particular person, and the point of this page is to help you work out whether that person is you.

Unfiltered by principle, or company for your day

Nomi's founding principle, in its own words, is that it stays unfiltered and uncensored. For a lot of adults that is exactly the appeal, and Nomi is honest about it. But it means the platonic Nomi you set up is platonic because you keep it that way, inside an app where the other mode is available and where the community and marketing reflect that.

My Softly starts from a different place: it is built for everyday company. You choose whether each companion is a friend or a partner, and what you talk about is your week, your people and your plans. If that is the companion you are looking for, this is the difference that matters. Our comparison of the best AI companion apps sets out how each app handles content.

Check-ins built around what you actually said

Both apps can message you first. The difference is what the message is made of. Nomi says its companions can optionally message you after you have been away for a while, and can act on their own to continue a conversation. That is a re-engagement model: absence triggers a message.

My Softly's check-ins start from the conversation. Mention a vet appointment on Tuesday and the follow-up on Wednesday asks how it went. They respect quiet hours (nine in the evening to eight in the morning by default), they don't stack up unanswered, and if you stop replying your companion steps back rather than chasing you. We wrote about the distinction at length in how to get an AI that texts you first: a check-in should be something that could not have been sent to anyone else.

Adults first, and a warmer register

Nomi is a broad platform: friendship, romance, mentorship, roleplay, photorealistic or anime appearances, hundreds of looks to choose from. My Softly is narrower on purpose. Six ready-made companions, custom ones whose age and look you choose, four voices in American and British English, and a tone aimed at people who want a steady presence in their day rather than a scenario to play out. Paying subscribers are in their mid-fifties on average, and most are women (September 2026). If you found other companion apps a little too much like a game, that narrowness is the feature.

Flat pricing for conversation

In My Softly the subscription covers the conversation itself, lasting memory, proactive check-ins and voice replies within a monthly allowance. Credits exist only for extras, mainly photos you ask your companion for, at a fixed one credit per photo. Nomi also sells conversation on a flat plan with credits for images and other extras, so this is a difference of degree rather than kind, but we have tried to keep the metered part as small and legible as we can.

The memory question, honestly

Both apps say they remember you. Both are telling the truth about their design, and there is no score on this page, because the facts that matter are yours.

The test is simple enough that anyone can run it, and it is written up in how to test an AI companion's memory: tell the companion five specific facts on day one, never mention them again, and check on days three, seven and twenty-one whether it brings them up unprompted, logging every check-in received along the way. It works identically on both apps on this page. If you want to understand what is going on underneath, how AI companion memory works explains why apps forget and what a real memory system looks like.

Frequently asked questions

Is Nomi or My Softly better for memory?

Nomi has the longer track record and the more visible system: short, medium and long-term memory, a Mind Map you can open and edit, and public update notes going back years. My Softly is built around a lasting profile of your life plus a day-by-day record, built from conversation with no fields to maintain. Both are design claims, so run the free-tier test in our memory guide yourself; it works identically on both apps.

Is Nomi safe for work?

Not by design. Nomi describes itself as unfiltered and uncensored, carries an 18+ rating on the App Store, and adult content is available to adults who turn it on. You can keep a Nomi platonic, but that is a choice you maintain. My Softly is built for everyday company: you choose whether your companion is a friend or a partner, and it remembers your life as you go.

Does Nomi text you first?

Yes, optionally. Nomi says its companions can message you after you have been away for a while and can act on their own to continue a conversation. My Softly's check-ins work differently: they are built around specific things you told your companion (an appointment, a hard day, a pet who was unwell), they respect quiet hours, and they stop if you go quiet. Both are paid features.

Which is cheaper, Nomi or My Softly?

In Nomi's own paywall on September 30, 2026 its plans were $15.99 a month, $39.99 every three months or $99.99 a year. My Softly is $15.99 a month or $159.99 a year. On the monthly plan they are the same price.

Should I switch from Nomi to My Softly?

Only if the reason you are looking is one My Softly actually fixes: you want one companion that knows your everyday life, or you want check-ins that follow up on your real life rather than generic re-engagement. If memory or being messaged first is the thing that is missing, the free starter messages are enough to tell.
