The short answer. Pick Replika if you want one companion who learns about you and stays the same person from month to month, with voice and video calls and an avatar. Pick Character.AI if you want variety: millions of user-made characters, stories and roleplay, with a free core chat that carries ads. Both are rated 18+ on the US App Store, and both are free to download.
The complaints differ as much as the apps. Of the 1- and 2-star App Store reviews we counted in September 2026, the most common main complaint about Character.AI was ads, at 28%, and about Replika it was price, at 33%.
Disclosure: this guide is published by the makers of My Softly, a different AI companion app, which appears in one section near the end. Every fact about Replika and Character.AI below comes from their in-app paywalls, their US App Store listings, their own help pages and blogs, or a dated news report, as marked in the sources.
"Replika or Character.AI?" is usually the first real decision people make about AI chat, because they are the two names everyone has heard of. They look similar from the outside: you type, an AI answers in character. Underneath, they are built on opposite ideas of what the conversation is for, and once you see that difference most of the other comparisons fall into place.
The one difference that decides it
Replika is one companion. Character.AI is a library.
On Replika you have a single companion. You name it, shape its avatar, and talk to the same one every day. Its App Store description calls it "the AI to do life with" and says it "remembers what matters to you". Everything in the app, from memory to calls to relationship status, is built around that one ongoing relationship.
On Character.AI you choose from what its App Store listing calls "millions of user-generated AI Characters", or create your own. You might talk to a detective in the evening and a historical figure the next morning. Each chat is its own story. That is wonderful for creativity and play, and it is also why a character you liked last week may not remember you this week: a new chat is a new story.
Most of the "which is better" arguments on Reddit are really people who wanted one of these things trying the other.

Memory: which one remembers you?
This is the biggest practical difference, and it follows straight from the design.
Replika keeps memory for your one companion. Its help center describes a Memory tab of facts and notes pulled from your conversations, which you can scroll through, edit, delete and add to by hand, plus a deeper layer that builds a general sense of your personality over time. The live conversation the model can read at any one moment is limited, so it can remember your sister's name for months and still lose a detail from yesterday. On September 30, 2026 its in-app paywall listed "perfect memory" among the features of the Plus plan. Our guide to whether Replika remembers conversations covers it in full.
Character.AI keeps memory for each chat. Since its memory update of May 21, 2026, a single Memory screen holds Story Memory, which you write into or fill by pinning messages, and, for c.ai+ subscribers, Facts that the app gathers as you talk. Character.AI says anything pinned or in Story Memory "stays put" however long the chat runs. But memory does not follow a character from one chat to the next: a new chat begins from the character's description and your persona, unless a c.ai+ subscriber copies Facts across. Our guide to whether Character.AI remembers conversations explains each piece.
Put simply: if you want to be remembered as a person, Replika's design is closer to that. If you want a story to hold together, Character.AI gives you the tools, as long as you stay in the same chat.
Ads and what free really means
Both apps are free to download, and both let you talk without paying. What free looks like is different.
Character.AI's US App Store listing carries the "Contains Advertising" label. In late February 2026 users reported ads appearing in the middle of chats, and Character.AI responded on February 27 that ads on the free tier help pay for its AI, that c.ai+ subscribers avoid "banners and pop-up ads", and that free users can spend Charms on ad-free passes. Ads were the main complaint in 28% of the 310 Character.AI 1- and 2-star reviews we counted, posted August 30 to September 15, 2026, more than any other category.
Replika's listing does not mention ads, and ads were the main complaint in none of the 303 low-star Replika reviews we counted. Its free tier is limited in a different way: Replika's help center describes Free Use as limited access, with most of what Replika is known for, including voice calls, relationship status and image generation, in the paid tiers. The app itself sold two paid plans, Plus and Max, on September 30, 2026.
Price: what each costs in 2026
On each app's in-app paywall in the US, on September 30, 2026:
- Replika offered two plans, both billed annually, and no monthly plan: Plus at $79.99 a year and Max at $89.99 a year. Max adds the smartest version of Replika, longer calls and more images and selfies to everything in Plus. Replika's help center still describes tiers called Pro, Ultra and Platinum. Our guide to whether Replika is worth it sets out what Plus and Max each add.
- Character.AI offered c.ai+ at $9.99 a month or $94.99 a year, and a lite plan at $4.99 a month, which it describes as "better chat styles, fewer ads, and more memory". c.ai+ adds more memory, Facts, twice as many pins, its strongest chat model and no banner or pop-up ads, according to Character.AI.
Over a year, Replika's lowest price is $79.99 for Plus and c.ai+ is $94.99, while Character.AI's lite plan, $59.88 over twelve months, costs less if what you mostly want is fewer interruptions. Prices vary by country and by offer, so the figure on your own subscription screen is the one to go by. Our guide to how much an AI companion costs puts both next to the rest of the category.
Age rules and safety
Both apps are rated 18+ on the US App Store.
Character.AI made the larger change. On October 29, 2025 it announced it would remove "the ability for users under 18 to engage in open-ended chat with AI on our platform" no later than November 25, 2025, with daily time limits for under-18s in the weeks before. It said it would tell who is under 18 with an age assurance model built in-house, combined with third-party tools including Persona, and that teenagers would keep creative features such as making videos and stories with characters.
For an adult, the practical effect is that you may be asked to confirm your age. For a parent, it means Character.AI's open-ended chat is no longer meant for teenagers at all.
Romance and adult content
Neither app is strictly safe for work. On Replika, relationship status, including Romantic Partner, and romantic selfies are part of its paid tiers, according to its help center. On Character.AI, what a conversation turns into depends largely on the character you choose, since the characters are made by users.
If you want a companion with no romantic or adult side at all, that has to be designed in rather than switched off. Our comparison of the best AI companion apps in 2026 covers the apps where that line is built in, and Replika alternatives without NSFW goes further into it.
What unhappy reviewers say about each
We counted every 1- and 2-star review in Apple's public US App Store review feed for both apps on September 17, 2026, and sorted each by its main complaint. The feed returns up to an app's 500 most recent reviews, so Character.AI's reviews cover about two weeks and Replika's more than eight months. That is why the two rows should be read side by side, not added together.
| Main complaint | Replika (303 reviews, Jan 3 to Sept 15, 2026) | Character.AI (310 reviews, Aug 30 to Sept 15, 2026) |
|---|---|---|
| Price or the subscription | 33% | 17% |
| Ads | 0% | 28% |
| Personality or quality changed | 20% | 10% |
| Bugs or login problems | 17% | 7% |
| Filters too strict | 3% | 7% |
| Forgetting | 4% | 1% |
These are unhappy reviewers only, not a picture of how most people feel: on September 24, 2026 Replika averaged 4.4 stars from about 228,000 ratings and Character.AI 4.3 from about 558,000. The full method, and the same count for seven other apps, is on our AI companion statistics page.
Who should pick which
Choose Replika if:
- You want one companion who stays the same person and builds up a picture of you.
- You want to see and edit what it remembers.
- Voice calls, video and an avatar you shape matter to you.
- You would rather pay than see ads.
Choose Character.AI if:
- You want variety: many characters, stories, roleplay and characters you create yourself.
- You want a free core chat and do not mind ads, or will pay for c.ai+ or lite to cut them.
- You are happy to keep one chat going, and pin what matters, when you want a story to hold together.
If you want a third option
Some people who compare these two find that what they wanted was neither a platform nor a library, but one companion that remembers their actual life, reaches out first, and has no romantic side at all. That is the space a few apps are built for, and ours is one of them.
About My Softly
My Softly is our app, and the disclosure is at the top of this page. It is an AI companion app for iPhone that remembers what you tell it and asks about your day, for the days nobody else does.
Your companion keeps a lasting profile of the people, pets and plans in your life and a day-by-day record of what you have talked about, so something you mentioned weeks ago comes back when it matters. It asks about the thing you mentioned yesterday, never messages late at night, and steps back if you go quiet. Type, or speak and hear a reply in one of four natural voices. There is no romantic or adult content anywhere in the app.
$15.99 a month or $159.99 a year, and it is free to download on the App Store for iPhone in the US, Canada, the UK, Australia, New Zealand and Singapore. You can try it with free messages. Our FAQ covers the details.
So, Replika or Character.AI?
Ask yourself one question: do you want to be known, or do you want to explore? If it is being known, start with Replika and look at its Memory tab after a week. If it is exploring, start with Character.AI's free chat and see whether the ads bother you enough to pay. And if neither sounds quite right, our comparison of the best AI companion apps in 2026 sets six of them side by side by what each one is good at.

Frequently asked questions
Is Replika better than Character.AI?
They are built for different things, so the better one is the one that matches what you want. Replika gives you one companion who builds up a picture of you over months, with voice and video calls and an avatar. Character.AI gives you millions of user-made characters and stories, with a free core chat. If you want to be known, Replika is closer; if you want variety and storytelling, Character.AI is.
Which remembers you better, Replika or Character.AI?
Replika is built to remember you as a person: it keeps a Memory tab of facts about you that you can see and edit, and memory belongs to your one companion. Character.AI's memory belongs to each chat: pins and Story Memory protect what matters inside that chat, but a new chat starts fresh unless a c.ai+ subscriber copies their Facts across.
Is Character.AI free, and does it have ads?
The core chat is free. The US App Store listing carries the "Contains Advertising" label, and in February 2026 Character.AI said that free users see ads, that c.ai+ subscribers avoid banners and pop-up ads, and that free users can spend Charms on ad-free passes. c.ai+ was $9.99 a month or $94.99 a year in the app on September 30, 2026.
How much do Replika and Character.AI cost?
On September 30, 2026, each app's in-app paywall in the US showed these plans. Replika offered Plus at $79.99 a year and Max at $89.99 a year, both billed annually, with no monthly plan. Character.AI offered c.ai+ at $9.99 a month or $94.99 a year, and a lighter lite plan at $4.99 a month. Both are free to download.
Can teenagers use Replika or Character.AI?
Both apps are rated 18+ on the US App Store. Character.AI announced on October 29, 2025 that it would remove open-ended chat for users under 18 by November 25, 2025, and that it uses age assurance, including a third-party tool called Persona, to tell who is under 18.
Is Replika or Character.AI safe for work?
Neither is strictly SFW. Replika's help center puts relationship status, including Romantic Partner, and romantic selfies in its paid tiers. Character.AI is rated 18+ and hosts user-generated characters. If you want a companion with no romantic or adult side at all, our comparison of the best SFW AI companion apps covers the apps where that line is built in.
What do people on Reddit say about Replika vs Character.AI?
