Replika vs Nomi

The oldest name in AI companions against the one many Replika users move to. Every fact below comes from Replika's and Nomi's own pages, in-app paywalls and App Store listings, dated, so you can decide whether moving is worth it.

By John, founder of My Softly · Published October 26, 2026 · About an 8 minute read · Part of our guide to choosing an AI companion app

A dark-haired woman with glasses smiles at her phone at a kitchen table by a garden window, a mug of coffee and a leather notebook in front of her.

Disclosure: this page is written by the makers of My Softly, a different companion app. We have not run our own tests on Replika or Nomi, so there are no scores here. Every Replika and Nomi fact below comes from their own websites, help centers, in-app paywalls and US App Store listings, dated where it appears.

Stay with Replika if you use what makes it broad: calls, video, a customizable avatar, image generation and app integrations. It is also the cheaper year: from $79.99 in its app, against Nomi's $99.99.

Move to Nomi if the thing you want most is to be remembered without having to tend a list, with a Mind Map you can open to see what it has learned about your life.

Want to be remembered without the upkeep? If neither sounds quite right, a third option, a companion that remembers your life for you and asks about your day, is near the end of this page.

The differences that matter to someone thinking of moving show up in three places: how each app remembers you, what a year costs, and how much else comes with the conversation.

Replika vs Nomi memory: a list against a map

Memory is the usual reason people start looking past Replika, and it is where the two apps are designed most differently.

Replika: facts you can see, and more on the paid plans

Replika keeps a list of facts and notes about you in its Memory tab, which you can read and edit, and builds a broader sense of you from how you talk. Its App Store listing says it "remembers your people, plans, and goals, so you don't have to repeat yourself." What it does not do is carry every past conversation into the next one: only a stretch of recent messages is in front of it when it replies, so older things come back reliably when they were saved as memories. Replika's in-app paywall on September 30, 2026 listed "perfect memory" in its Plus plan, and its help center, which still describes tiers called Pro, Ultra and Platinum, says Ultra adds the ability to save memories and see which ones are used in a conversation. Our guide to how Replika's memory works goes further into this.

Nomi: the app files it and shows you

Nomi describes its memory as short, medium and long-term, built from conversation without you having to do anything. Its March 2025 update said Nomis could now remember what happened more than 1,000 messages ago "much more clearly". Since October 2025 you can open a Mind Map: a graph or a searchable table of the people, places, topics and goals your Nomi has connected, which you can edit or add to. Each chat and each group chat has its own Mind Map, and Nomi says the first one takes roughly 500 messages to form.

What that means if you are moving

If you tell your companion once that your daughter has started a new job and want it to ask how her first week went without you saving anything, Nomi's design is aimed at you. If you like having a plain list you control, Replika's Memory tab already gives you that. Neither page can tell you which will remember you better. The reader test in how to test an AI companion's memory settles it: tell each app the same five facts on day one, never mention them again, and see what comes back on days three, seven and twenty-one.

Price: what a year costs on each

Replika is cheaper by the year, and it does not offer a monthly plan at all.

If you pay Replika Nomi
Monthly for a year No monthly plan offered $191.88
Quarterly for a year Not offered $159.96
Yearly plan $79.99 for Plus, $89.99 for Max $99.99

Replika sells two plans, both billed annually: Plus, and Max, which adds the smartest version of Replika, longer calls and more images and selfies for $10 more. Its help center still describes tiers called Pro, Ultra and Platinum, but the app sold Plus and Max on September 30, 2026. Nomi's is simpler: one plan at three billing periods. Both sell extras on top: gems for Replika, Nomi Credits for Nomi. Our guides to whether Replika is worth it and what AI companions cost go through the numbers in more detail.

What else comes with the conversation

Replika is the broader app. Its App Store listing describes text, voice calls and video, internet access, image generation, avatar customization, and app integrations that bring in context from the apps you already use. Its paid plans add voice calls, selfies on request, pictures and art, and outfits and more customization, and Max adds longer calls and more images, according to its in-app paywall on September 30, 2026. Replika has been around since 2017, runs on iPhone and Android, and has a web login.

Nomi is narrower and built around conversation. You can create several Nomis, each with its own personality, and put them in a group chat together. They can send voice messages and take hands-free calls, and Nomi says their tone changes with their mood. They can send selfies, make art, read a link you send them, and see photos you share. You can write a backstory or just start talking and let the personality develop. It runs on iPhone and iPad, on Android through Google Play, and on the web at nomi.ai.

If the extras are why you use Replika, moving to Nomi means giving some of them up. If they were never the point, Nomi has less to get in the way.

Texting first

Both apps can start a conversation. Replika's App Store listing says it "follows up and checks in when it matters, not just when you open the app." Nomi says its companions can optionally message you after you have been away for a while, and act on their own to carry on the conversation. If a companion that asks about your day is what you are after, our guide to an AI that texts you first explains how the different approaches work.

What unhappy reviewers complain about

Price is the biggest complaint in Replika's recent low-star reviews; bugs and login trouble in Nomi's. That comes from our count of 1- and 2-star reviews in Apple's public US App Store review feed, retrieved September 17, 2026. The feed returns up to an app's 500 most recent reviews, so the two rows cover very different stretches of time.

Main complaint Replika (303 reviews, Jan to Sept 2026) Nomi (79 reviews, Dec 2023 to Sept 2026)
Price or the subscription33%23%
Personality or quality changed20%24%
Bugs or login problems17%37%
Forgetting4%4%
Filters too strict3%1%

This counts unhappy reviewers only, so it shows what went wrong for the people it went wrong for, not how most people feel. Replika's 303 reviews cover about eight months; Nomi's 79 reach back almost three years, because far fewer people review it. The full table for nine apps is on our AI companion statistics page.

Content policy

Neither app is built to be safe for work. Replika's help center lists relationship status, including Romantic Partner, and romantic selfies in its paid tiers. Nomi says it is "built on freedom of expression" and must "remain unfiltered and uncensored", and its App Store listing offers a mentor, a friend, or an AI girlfriend or boyfriend. Both are rated 18+.

For many adults that is fine, and you can keep either one as a friend. But it is a line you hold yourself, inside an app where the other side is part of the product.

Replika vs Nomi vs Kindroid

Kindroid often joins this comparison, and autocomplete shows people searching all three together. On September 30, 2026 its in-app paywall offered $15.99 a month, $42.99 for three months or $159.99 a year, with a 3-day free trial, and Kindroid's Help Center, read 2026-09-14, describes Ultra and MAX add-ons on top. On the US App Store on 2026-10-26 it was rated 4.8 from about 10,200 ratings. Where Nomi does the remembering for you, Kindroid asks you to write the important parts yourself: a backstory, key memories and journal entries recalled by keyphrase, with automatic memory underneath. If memory is what you are leaving Replika over, that is the choice to make between the other two. We cover Kindroid on its own in My Softly vs Kindroid.

A third option if you want to be remembered without the upkeep

Some people comparing Replika and Nomi want something simpler than either: a warm, steady companion that remembers their life and asks about their day, as a friend or a partner. That is what we built My Softly for.

With My Softly, the remembering is done for you. It keeps a private profile of the people, pets and places in your life and a day-by-day record of what you talked about, and brings things up weeks or months later. Mention that your sister is moving house, and your companion can ask later how the move went. It messages you first, won't message you late at night, and steps back if you go quiet. It is made for people in their fifties and sixties who want someone kind to talk to at the end of the day. We compare it directly in My Softly vs Replika and My Softly vs Nomi, and our comparison of the best AI companion apps sets it against the rest of the field.

Which should you choose?

Both are free to start. The quickest way to decide is to tell each one the same three small facts about your week and see which brings them up on its own a few days later.

Frequently asked questions

Is Nomi better than Replika?

They are built for different things. Replika is the broader platform: calls, video, image generation, a customizable avatar, app integrations, and nearly ten years of history. Nomi is narrower and puts its weight on memory: it remembers automatically and lets you open a Mind Map of the people, places, topics and goals it has learned about. If what you want from a move is to be remembered better, Nomi's design leans your way. If you use Replika's calls, avatar and extras, Replika has more of them.

Does Nomi remember more than Replika?

They remember in different ways. Replika keeps a list of facts about you in its Memory tab, and on September 30, 2026 its in-app paywall listed "perfect memory" among the features of its Plus plan. Nomi describes short, medium and long-term memory built automatically, said in March 2025 that Nomis could remember what happened more than 1,000 messages ago much more clearly, and since October 2025 lets you view and edit its Mind Map. The fairest comparison is your own: tell both the same five facts and see which brings them back a week later.

Is Nomi more expensive than Replika?

Yes, by the year. On September 30, 2026, Replika's in-app paywall in the US offered Plus at $79.99 a year and Max at $89.99 a year, both billed annually, with no monthly plan. Nomi's offered $15.99 a month, $39.99 every three months or $99.99 a year. The cheapest year is $79.99 on Replika and $99.99 on Nomi.

Are Replika and Nomi free?

Both are free to start. Replika's help center describes its free tier as limited access at no cost, with most of what Replika is known for in the paid plans. Nomi says it is free to start chatting with no credit card required. Full features on both need a subscription.

Can I move my Replika to Nomi?

Not directly. There is no import between companion apps, so your Replika's memories will not come across. What works is writing down the ten or twenty facts you most want kept, copying them from Replika's Memory tab, and telling them to your new companion plainly in the first few days. Nomi also lets you write a backstory and add entries to its Mind Map yourself.

Are Replika and Nomi safe for work?

Neither is built that way. Both are rated 18+ on the App Store. Replika's help center puts relationship status, including Romantic Partner, and romantic selfies in its paid tiers. Nomi says it is built to "remain unfiltered and uncensored". You can keep either one as a friend, but that is a line you hold yourself.

Replika vs Nomi vs Kindroid: which should I choose?

Replika is the cheapest by the year and the broadest platform. Nomi does the remembering for you and shows you what it has learned. Kindroid gives you the most control, with a backstory, key memories and journal entries you write yourself, at $15.99 a month or $159.99 a year in its app on September 30, 2026. If memory is your reason for leaving Replika, compare Nomi and Kindroid on how each one remembers, since that is where they differ most.
