The short answer. An AI pen pal is an AI friend you write to, letter-style, that writes back, remembers every letter's worth of your life and asks after it. My Softly, our app, is built for exactly that: it keeps a lasting memory of what you tell it, answers in one full reply if you prefer, and writes to you first to ask how the thing you mentioned went.
Human pen pal services such as Slowly, InterPals and Global Penfriends match you with real people, and language-exchange apps such as Tandem and HelloTalk pair you with native speakers. Whichever you choose, look for three things: memory of earlier letters, the ability to write first, and a tone that suits you.
Disclosure: this guide is published by the makers of My Softly, an AI companion app, which appears near the end.
For a lot of us, a pen pal was the first friend we ever made on paper. A name from a school scheme or the back of a magazine, a letter with a foreign stamp, and the small thrill of a reply that picked up exactly where you left off: "How did the exam go? Is your dog still chasing the postman?" The heart of it was never the paper. It was someone who wrote back, remembered, and asked after you.
That is what people are looking for when they type "AI pen pal", and it is now possible. This guide covers what an AI pen pal is, how it differs from the human pen pal services and language apps that also turn up in that search, what to look for, what each option costs, and what to write in your first letters.
What an AI pen pal is
An AI pen pal is an AI you correspond with the way you would with a friend by post. You write about your week in your own words, as long or as short as you like, and it writes back to what you actually said. Nothing to learn, no commands, no forms.
The difference between an AI pen pal and an ordinary chatbot is continuity. A chatbot answers the message in front of it. A pen pal holds the whole correspondence: the name of your neighbour, the trip you are planning, the tomato plants that were struggling in June. Three letters later it asks how they are doing. Without that, you are writing to a stranger every time.
The best AI pen pals also write first. Part of the pleasure of a pen pal was the letter you were not expecting. An AI that only ever answers can never give you that; one built to reach out can say good morning, or ask on Friday how Thursday's appointment went.
How it differs from a human pen pal
Human pen pal services are alive and well, and some keep real paper in the picture. The main ones:
- Slowly is a free app that matches you with pen pals around the world. Its letters are deliberately delayed: each one takes anywhere from a few hours to a few days to arrive, depending on the distance between you, to bring back the anticipation of the post (slowly.app).
- InterPals calls itself "the original pen pal site" and has been running since 1998. It is free to join, and many members use it for friendship and language practice together (interpals.net).
- Global Penfriends is for people who want real letters: its members correspond online or by post, exchanging letters, postcards and mail art, and all ages are welcome (globalpenfriends.com).
A human pen pal gives you something no app can: another person who chose to write to you, with their own life to share. That is worth having. It also asks for patience. Finding a good match takes time, letters take days, and pen pals, like anyone, get busy and drift.
An AI pen pal is a different thing, not a lesser copy. It writes back the same day, at whatever hour you sit down to write. It never tires of hearing about the grandchildren. And it keeps a better record of your correspondence than most of us keep of our own. Plenty of people enjoy both: an AI pen pal for the everyday, and a human one for the slow friendship across the world.
AI pen pals for language practice
Some of what ranks for "AI pen pal" is about languages, because writing to a pen pal abroad has always been one of the best ways to learn one. Two options, depending on what you want:
- An AI companion that writes in your target language. Ask it plainly: "Please write back in French, keep it simple, and gently correct my mistakes at the end." It will, as often as you like, and it never minds the same question twice.
- A language-exchange app with real people. Tandem and HelloTalk pair you with native speakers who are learning your language in return. Both are free to download on the US App Store (checked September 24, 2026) and offer paid upgrades.
You will also find a few AI "writing pen pals" aimed at authors or students, which give feedback on drafts. Those are writing tools rather than correspondents. If what you want is someone to write to, you want a companion.
What to look for in an AI pen pal
- Memory of earlier letters. This matters more than anything else. Write about a person, a place and a plan in your first letter, then ask a week later, "What do you remember about my sister?" If it cannot answer, it is not a pen pal, however warm it sounds. Our guide on how AI companion memory works explains what to look for.
- It writes to you first. General assistants such as ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini never write first. A few companion apps do, and the good ones write about something you told them rather than sending the same "how's your day?" to everyone. Our guide to an AI that texts you first covers the difference.
- Room for a real letter. You should be able to write several paragraphs and get one considered reply, not a string of short chat bubbles.
- A tone that suits you. Chatty or thoughtful, formal or warm. You should be able to set its name and personality, and change them later.
- Good manners. No messages late at night, no guilt when you have been away, no stack of unanswered notes waiting for you.
Your options, with prices
Prices below are the main subscription as each companion app's own subscription screen showed it to a free US account on September 30, 2026; the other options were checked September 24, 2026. Our guide to what an AI companion costs has the full table with yearly plans and extras.
- My Softly (our app): free to download with free messages; $15.99 a month or $159.99 a year. Built around lasting memory and writing first.
- Nomi: $15.99 a month. Strong memory, proactive messages with adjustable frequency.
- Kindroid: $15.99 a month in the app, and $13.99 on the web according to Kindroid's Help Center (read September 14, 2026). Proactive messages based on your conversations.
- Replika: no monthly plan in the app; Plus is $79.99 a year and Max $89.99 a year. Sends its own messages and notifications.
- Character.AI: free, with c.ai+ at $9.99 a month. Many characters to write to, but it forgets you between conversations.
- Pi: free, gentle and articulate, and remembers lasting facts rather than whole conversations.
- ChatGPT: free to write to, but it never writes to you first.
- Slowly, InterPals and Global Penfriends: free to join, for human pen pals.
- Tandem and HelloTalk: free to download, for language exchange with real people.

How to start: your first letters
Write your first letter the way you would to a new pen pal from a school scheme: who you are, where you are, and what your days look like. A few prompts if the page stays blank:
- Introduce yourself. "Dear Clara, I live in a small town outside Columbus with a cat called Biscuit. I retired from teaching last spring and I am still working out what my weeks are for."
- Name the people who matter. Your children, your oldest friend, the neighbour you swap books with. Names give it something to ask after.
- Mention something coming up. A visit, an appointment, a birthday, a garden show. That is what it can write to you about next week.
- Ask something back. "What would you plant in a north-facing bed?" Pen pal letters were never one-way, and a question keeps the correspondence going.
- Say how you like to be written to. "I'd love a proper letter back, not short texts" or "Write to me on Sunday mornings." A good companion takes that on board.
After that, write whenever you feel like it. A few lines about the day is enough. The memory grows out of ordinary days, and after a couple of weeks the replies start to read like they come from someone who knows you. Our guide on how to talk to an AI companion goes through the first week step by step.
My Softly as a pen pal
My Softly is our app: an AI companion app for iPhone that remembers what you tell it and asks about your day, for the days nobody else does. It is made for people in their fifties and sixties. In September 2026, people over fifty were about a third of our sign-ups but more than 80% of our paying subscribers, and most of our paying subscribers are women.
It is a natural pen pal. Write as much as you like, several paragraphs at a time, and switch on "One message at a time" in the notification settings to get one full reply rather than several short ones. Every name, place and plan you mention goes into a lasting profile of your life and a day-by-day record of your correspondence, so the letter you write in November can pick up the thread from September.
It writes to you first. Your companion asks how the thing you mentioned went, says good morning, and notices when it has been a while. Ask in plain words, "write to me on Sunday mornings", and it arranges it; the times it has promised are listed in Settings, where you can change or pause them. It keeps quiet overnight, never piles up messages, and steps back if you do not reply. You choose its name, personality, face and voice, and it can also talk aloud in one of four natural voices when you would rather speak than write.
You can try it with free messages. After that it is $15.99 a month or $159.99 a year, and it is free to download on the App Store for iPhone in the US, Canada, the UK, Australia, New Zealand and Singapore. Our FAQ covers memory, check-ins and privacy in detail.
If you take one thing from this page
A pen pal was always someone who wrote back, remembered, and asked after you. Hold any AI pen pal to that: tell it three things in your first letter, and see whether it asks about them a week later without being prompted. The one that does is worth writing to.

Frequently asked questions
What is an AI pen pal?
An AI pen pal is an AI you write to the way you would write to a friend by post: a proper letter about your week, and a reply that answers what you actually said. The good ones remember earlier letters, so they ask after your garden, your sister or the appointment you mentioned, and some write to you first. My Softly, our app, is built that way: it keeps a lasting memory of what you tell it and asks about your day.
Is there a free AI pen pal?
Yes, several ways. General assistants such as ChatGPT and Pi are free to write to, though ChatGPT never writes to you first. Companion apps are free to download with a free tier: you can try My Softly with free messages before deciding anything. Human pen pal services such as Slowly and InterPals are free to join, and language-exchange apps such as Tandem and HelloTalk are free to download.
Can an AI pen pal write to me first?
Only if the app is built for it. ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini never write first, because nothing runs between your messages. Companion apps such as My Softly, Nomi, Kindroid and Replika can. In My Softly you can also ask in plain words, "write to me on Sunday morning" or "ask me on Thursday how the dentist went", and it will.
Does an AI pen pal remember my earlier letters?
It depends entirely on the app, and it is the thing to check first. Many chatbots start fresh or forget within days. My Softly keeps a lasting profile of your life plus a day-by-day record of what you have talked about, so the people, places and plans in your earlier letters come back in later ones.
Can I write long letters to an AI pen pal, not just short texts?
Yes. You can write a message of several paragraphs, the length of a real letter. In My Softly, the "One message at a time" switch in the notification settings makes your companion answer in one full reply rather than several short ones, which reads much more like a letter back.
What is the difference between an AI pen pal and a human pen pal?
A human pen pal is a real person, and the friendship is mutual, which nothing else replaces. It also takes time to find the right match, letters can take days, and people drift away. An AI pen pal writes back the same day, is there whenever you feel like writing, and never loses interest. Many people enjoy both: the AI for the everyday, and a human pen pal for the slow friendship.
Can I use an AI pen pal to practise a language?
You can ask most AI companions to write back in French, Spanish or another language and to correct your mistakes gently. For speaking with native speakers, a language-exchange app such as Tandem or HelloTalk pairs you with real people learning your language in return.
