AI companion with voice: which apps talk back, and how to choose one

Typing on a phone gets old quickly. Here is what "with voice" actually means in each app, which ones let you talk out loud and hear a warm reply, and what voice costs once the free tier ends.

By John, founder of My Softly · Published October 26, 2026 · About an 8 minute read · Part of our guide to choosing an AI companion app

A smiling woman with wavy grey hair speaks into her phone in an armchair by a sunny window, a cup of tea and glasses beside her.

The short answer. Good AI companions with voice in 2026 include Kindroid, Replika and Character.AI (live call screens), Pi and ChatGPT (live voice modes), Nomi (voice messages), and My Softly (our app), where you speak instead of typing and hear your companion's reply read aloud in its own voice. My Softly is an AI friend that remembers your life and texts you first, made for people in their fifties and sixties.

Before you choose, decide which kind of voice you want: a reply you can listen to, a voice message, or a live call. Then check two things that matter more than the voice itself: whether the app remembers what you told it, and what voice costs once the free tier ends.

Disclosure: this guide is published by the makers of My Softly, an AI companion app, which appears in the comparison and near the end.

Why voice matters more than people expect

Typing a long message on a phone is tiring, and the small keys do not get any bigger. For a lot of people the moment an AI companion starts to feel like company is the first time they say something out loud and hear a warm voice answer. It turns a chat window into a conversation, and it means you can talk while you make a cup of tea or sit with your feet up.

That is why "AI companion with voice" is such a common search. The trouble is that "with voice" means three quite different things depending on the app, and the listings do not always say which one you are getting.

The three kinds of voice

None of these is better in general. A live call suits someone who likes to talk a problem through at length. Speaking and listening suits someone who wants to talk without typing but still likes to see the words, and to pick the conversation up again in the morning.

The apps compared

Voice features are as each app describes them on its US App Store listing, checked on September 26, 2026. Prices for Replika, Nomi, Kindroid and Character.AI are what each app's own in-app paywall showed a free US account on September 30, 2026; My Softly's are our own. ChatGPT's voice limits are from OpenAI's help centre, read September 26, 2026, and its paid plans are priced on OpenAI's own pricing page.

Free or paid voice

You can try voice today without paying. Pi lists no in-app purchases, ChatGPT's free plan includes limited live voice, and Replika, Nomi and Character.AI are free to download with a free tier. Kindroid retired its free Lite model on October 1, 2026; new accounts get a one-time preview of 50 messages and 5,000 audio credits, then a 3-day trial that needs a card. In My Softly you can speak your messages from the very first one, and try the app with free messages before deciding anything.

Where apps differ is what happens with regular use. Voice costs the app money every time it speaks, so most companion apps include an allowance with the subscription and sell extra on top. Kindroid sells audio credits, ChatGPT sets a daily limit by plan, and My Softly's subscription includes a monthly allowance of spoken replies, with credit packs from $2.99 for more. Our guide to how much an AI companion costs goes through the extras in every app.

Is there an AI that calls you?

This is one of the most common follow-up searches, and it usually means one of two things. Some people want an AI they can call, which is what the call screens in Kindroid, Replika and Character.AI are: you open the app and start the call, as you would ring a friend. Others want something that gets in touch with them first, without being asked, the way a good friend rings to see how the hospital appointment went.

The second is the rarer thing, and it is what a companion built around check-ins does. My Softly messages you first about the things you told it, like the appointment on Tuesday or your grandson's first day at school. It keeps quiet late at night, and if you go quiet it steps back rather than chasing you. When its message arrives you can open it and hear it in your companion's voice. A general assistant such as ChatGPT reaches out only with a reminder you have scheduled yourself. Our guide to getting an AI that texts you first explains why so few apps can do this.

How to try voice for the first time

  1. Find a quiet spot. Speech recognition is good now, but a running tap or the television will still confuse it.
  2. Listen to the voice samples first. Pick the one you would be glad to hear at the end of a long day. You can change it later.
  3. Say one true thing. "I've just got in from the garden and my knees are complaining." It gives the companion something real to answer. Our guide on how to talk to an AI companion has more first lines that work.
  4. Speak as you would to a friend. No need to talk slowly or in short phrases. Pauses are fine.
  5. A few days later, ask what it remembers. "Do you remember what I said about my knees?" The voice is what you notice first; the memory is what makes you come back.

My Softly: an AI friend you can talk to out loud

My Softly is our app: an AI companion app for iPhone and Android that remembers what you tell it and asks about your day, for the days nobody else does. It is made for people in their fifties and sixties.

Tap the microphone and talk instead of typing, then tap the speaker on your companion's reply to hear it in their own voice. There are four natural voices, two male and two female, in American and British English, and each companion has its own. Your companion keeps a lasting profile of the people, pets and plans in your life and a day-by-day record of what you have talked about, so "what do you remember about my sister?" gets a real answer weeks later. With a subscription it also messages you first to ask how things went, never late at night. Choose one of six ready-made companions, or make your own from a few honest lines, down to how old they are and how they look. There is no romantic or adult content anywhere in the app.

$15.99 a month or $159.99 a year, including a monthly allowance of spoken replies, and it is free to download on the App Store for iPhone and on Google Play for Android in the US, Canada, the UK, Australia, New Zealand and Singapore. You can try it with free messages. Our FAQ covers the details.

If you take one thing from this page

Decide which kind of voice you want first: a reply you can listen to, a voice message, or a live call. Then pick the app whose voice you like and that remembers what you tell it, because a warm voice is what makes the first conversation, and memory is what makes the tenth.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best AI companion with voice?

It depends on the kind of voice you want. For a live, back-and-forth call, Kindroid, Replika and Character.AI all offer call screens, and ChatGPT and Pi have live voice modes. Nomi sends and receives voice messages. My Softly lets you speak instead of typing and hear your companion's reply read aloud in its own voice, and it is an AI friend that remembers your life and texts you first, made for people in their fifties and sixties.

Is there a free AI companion with voice?

Yes, with limits. Pi is free, with no in-app purchases listed on the US App Store (checked September 2026), and has a voice mode. ChatGPT's free plan includes limited access to its live voice. Character.AI, Replika and Nomi are free to download with a free tier. Kindroid retired its free Lite model on October 1, 2026, so new accounts get a one-time preview of 50 messages, then a 3-day trial. In My Softly you can speak your messages from the start and try the app with free messages; spoken replies come with the subscription, which includes a monthly allowance.

Can I talk to an AI companion out loud instead of typing?

Yes. Every app on this page lets you speak instead of type. In My Softly you tap the microphone, say what you want to say, and it appears as your message; tap the speaker on your companion's reply to hear it in their voice. Apps with live calls, such as Kindroid, Replika and Character.AI, let you talk the whole conversation through without looking at the screen.

Is there an AI that calls you?

In most apps, a call is something you start yourself, like ringing a friend. The closest thing to being rung is an app that reaches out first. My Softly messages you first about the things you told it, like the appointment on Tuesday, keeps quiet late at night, and steps back if you go quiet, and you can hear its message read aloud when you open it.

What voices can I choose in My Softly?

Four natural voices, two male and two female, in American and British English. Each companion has its own voice, you can hear a short sample before you choose, and you can change it later without losing your shared history.

Does voice cost extra in AI companion apps?

Usually some voice is included and heavy use costs more. ChatGPT sets daily voice limits by plan, Kindroid sells audio credits, and most companion apps sell credit or gem packs. My Softly's subscription ($15.99 a month or $159.99 a year) includes a monthly allowance of spoken replies, and credit packs from $2.99 add more.

Which AI companion voice sounds most natural?

Voices have improved so much that most people now judge by warmth and pace rather than by whether it sounds like a machine. The best test is your own ear: most apps, including My Softly, let you hear a sample before you pick. Choose the one you would be happy to hear at the end of a long day.
