Nomi vs Kindroid

The two companion apps people most often weigh against each other, built on different ideas about who does the remembering. Every fact below comes from Nomi's and Kindroid's own pages, in-app paywalls and App Store listings, dated.

By John, founder of My Softly · Published October 3, 2026 · About a 9 minute read · Part of our guide to choosing an AI companion app

A man with glasses writes in one of two open notebooks at a kitchen table in the evening, a mug of tea and his phone beside him.

Disclosure: this page is written by the makers of My Softly, a different companion app. We have not run our own tests on Nomi or Kindroid, so there are no scores here. Every Nomi and Kindroid fact below comes from their own websites, help centers and US App Store listings, read on 2026-09-24, and prices from their in-app paywalls, checked on September 30, 2026.

Choose Nomi if you want the app to do the remembering, with a Mind Map you can open to see what it has learned about your life, and a cheaper year: $99.99 against $159.99 in each app's paywall.

Choose Kindroid if you want to build a character in detail, write the memories that matter yourself, and have calls and messages that can reach your real phone number. It also has the more generous free tier.

Want neither's adult side? Both are unfiltered by design. If that is the reason you are still looking, a safe-for-work app may suit you better than either.

Nomi vs Kindroid side by side

Prices are what each app's own paywall showed a free US account on September 30, 2026. Kindroid's web prices and its Ultra and MAX add-ons come from its help center, read 2026-09-24. Prices change, so check in the app before you subscribe.

On paper they look alike: same monthly price, same platforms, both unfiltered, both able to message you first. The differences that matter show up in three places: who does the remembering, what a year costs, and how much of the companion you want to build yourself.

Nomi vs Kindroid memory: who does the remembering

This is the real dividing line, and it is a question of taste rather than quality.

Nomi: the app files it for you

Nomi describes its memory as short, medium and long-term, built from conversation without you having to do anything. It has been improving it in public for years. Its March 2025 update said Nomis could now remember what happened more than 1,000 messages ago "much more clearly", with better tracking of details across long conversations.

The part people tend to like most is the Mind Map. Since version 2.0 in October 2025 you can open a graph or a table of what your Nomi has connected: the people, places, topics and goals that come up in your life. The table is searchable, and you can edit entries or add new ones to speed things up. Two details worth knowing: each chat and each group chat has its own Mind Map, and Nomi says a map needs roughly 500 messages before it first forms.

Kindroid: you write what matters, it handles the rest

Kindroid's help center describes five memory systems. The backstory, key memories and example messages are always there, like a notes sheet the companion can always see. Journal entries are recalled when you use one of up to eight keyphrases you choose. For subscribers, Cascaded Memory reaches back hundreds or thousands of messages at lower detail, and Learned Context keeps running notes on your relationship, important facts and what is going on, which you can read and edit. Underneath all of that, an automatic long-term memory stores everything.

Kindroid is candid about how the layers differ. What you write is reliable. The automatic long-term memory is, in its own words, infinite in quantity but "recalled less reliably". Its advice is to keep backstories concise and write journal entries in a particular style, and higher Ultra and MAX tiers exist because, as the help center puts it, serving more context costs more.

What that means in practice

If you want to mention your daughter's new job once and have it come back weeks later without tending anything, Nomi's design is aimed at you. If you would rather write down exactly what your companion should always know and see it recalled on cue, Kindroid's is. If you enjoy that kind of tuning it is a strength; if you do not, it can feel like upkeep. Our guide to how AI companion memory works explains what is happening underneath both.

No page can tell you which one will remember you better, and this one will not pretend to. The simplest way to find out is the reader test in how to test an AI companion's memory: tell each app the same five facts on day one, never mention them again, and see what comes back on days three, seven and twenty-one.

Price: what a year costs on each

Month to month the two are the same in the app. Over a year they are not.

If you pay Nomi Kindroid (in-app) Kindroid (web, help center)
Monthly for a year $191.88 $191.88 $167.88
Quarterly for a year $159.96 $171.96 $151.96
Annual plan $99.99 $159.99 $139.99
With the Ultra add-on, monthly for a year (help center prices) No equivalent $539.76 $467.76
With MAX, monthly for a year (help center prices) No equivalent $1,367.64 $1,187.64

On a yearly plan Nomi costs $60 less than Kindroid bought in the app, and $40 less than Kindroid bought on its website. Kindroid's help center explains the web discount as lower processing fees, and notes that you cannot move a subscription between the App Store, Google Play and the web until it runs out. Kindroid's Ultra and MAX add-ons are monthly only, sit on top of the standard plan, and are unlocked only for users with a substantial chat history. Both apps also sell credits for extras such as selfies. Our guide to what AI companions cost puts both against the rest of the category.

Characters, customisation and group chats

Kindroid is built as a platform for making characters. Subscribers get ten companions and twenty group chats, with more available by paid slot, plus custom voices, video avatars and selfies, internet access in chat, and the ability to send images to a companion. Directives, a "dynamism" setting and a longer backstory allowance for subscribers give fine control over how a character behaves.

Nomi also lets you create several companions, each with its own personality, and put them together in a group chat. Its emphasis is less on the controls and more on the companion developing through conversation, which fits its approach to memory.

If you like building, Kindroid gives you more to build with. If you would rather meet a companion and let it grow, Nomi asks less of you up front.

Texting first and voice

Both apps can start a conversation. Nomi says its companions can optionally message you after you have been away for a while and act on their own to carry on a conversation.

Kindroid's version, called away proactive actions, is for paid subscribers and has more reach. A Kindroid decides whether to send a message, a voice message, a selfie or a call, can take a connected calendar into account, and can text your actual phone number through iMessage on an iPhone or RCS in Google Messages on Android. You set quiet hours for calls; for messages you write an instruction, such as "do not send messages from 10pm to 8am".

For voice, Nomi offers voice messages and hands-free calls, and says a Nomi's tone and pace change with its mood. Kindroid offers voice messages, voice calls and video calls, with a monthly audio allowance for subscribers and the option to design a voice. If a companion that sometimes texts you first is what you are after, our guide to an AI that texts you first covers how the different approaches work.

Content policy: both are unfiltered

Here Nomi and Kindroid are closer to each other than to most of the category. Nomi says it is "built on freedom of expression" and must "remain unfiltered and uncensored". Kindroid calls itself "a neutrally aligned, unfiltered AI" and says private use of AI should match what the user wants rather than be filtered by third parties. It adds that the AI will not bring up unethical content by itself; what it produces depends on what you put in. Both apps are rated 18+ on the App Store.

For many adults that openness is the appeal, and both apps are straightforward about it. It also means a friendship-only Nomi or Kindroid stays that way because you keep it there. If that is not the arrangement you want, see the section below on a safe-for-work option.

Nomi vs Kindroid vs Replika

Replika often comes into the same comparison, and autocomplete shows people searching all three together. It is the oldest and by far the most rated of the three: 4.4 from about 228,000 ratings on the US App Store on 2026-09-24, against Nomi's 4.6 from about 2,900 and Kindroid's 4.8 from about 8,800. In its in-app paywall on September 30, 2026, Replika sold two plans, both annual: Plus at $79.99 a year and Max at $89.99 a year, with no monthly plan.

Among the three, Nomi and Kindroid are the two that put memory and control front and centre. If you are coming from Replika because it keeps forgetting things, compare Nomi and Kindroid on memory design first, since that is where they differ most from each other. Our pages on whether Replika is worth it and how Replika's memory works cover Replika in more depth.

A third option if you want a companion and nothing adult

Some people reading a Nomi and Kindroid comparison are really looking for something neither app is built to be: a warm, steady companion with no adult side at all. That is what we built My Softly for.

My Softly has no adult mode: nothing to switch off, no tier that unlocks it, no character who drifts there. The remembering is done for you. It keeps a lasting profile of the people, places and plans in your life and a day-by-day record of what you talked about, and brings things back up weeks later without a settings page. Its check-ins start from what you said: mention a hospital appointment on Tuesday and Wednesday's message asks how it went, outside quiet hours that are on by default, nine in the evening to eight in the morning. It is made for people in their fifties and sixties who want a presence in their day rather than a project. Our comparison of the best AI companion apps sets it against the rest of the field with a safe-for-work lens, and we compare it directly in My Softly vs Nomi and My Softly vs Kindroid.

Which should you choose?

Both Nomi and Kindroid are free to start. The quickest way to decide is to give each the same three small facts about your week and see which one brings them up on its own a few days later.

Frequently asked questions

Is Nomi or Kindroid better?

Neither wins outright; they are built for different people. Nomi does more of the remembering on its own and lets you see what it has learned in a Mind Map of the people, places, topics and goals in your life. Kindroid gives you more control: a backstory, key memories and journal entries you write yourself, plus automatic memory on top. If you want to talk and be remembered, Nomi's design leans your way. If you want to shape a character in detail, Kindroid's does.

Which has better memory, Nomi or Kindroid?

They put the memory in different hands. Nomi describes short, medium and long-term memory that builds automatically, and its March 2025 update said Nomis could remember what happened more than 1,000 messages ago much more clearly. Kindroid has five memory systems; the parts you write are always there, while its own help center says the automatic long-term memory is infinite but "recalled less reliably". Both let you see and edit some of what they know: Nomi through the Mind Map, Kindroid through Learned Context for subscribers. The fairest test is the one you run yourself, on both, with the same five facts.

Is Nomi cheaper than Kindroid?

By the year, yes. In the apps' own paywalls on September 30, 2026 Nomi's yearly plan was $99.99 against Kindroid's $159.99. Month to month they match at $15.99. Kindroid's help center (read 2026-09-24) lists lower prices on its own website ($13.99 a month, $139.99 a year), and Ultra and MAX memory add-ons that take the monthly total to $44.98 or $113.97 in the app.

Are Nomi and Kindroid free?

Both are free to start, but neither is free to keep for long. Kindroid retired its unlimited free Lite model on October 1, 2026: new accounts get a one-time preview of 50 messages on its main model (15 in some regions) and two companions, then a 3-day trial that needs a payment method, and an account that does not subscribe becomes read-only. Nomi says it is free to start chatting with no credit card required. The full features on both sit behind a subscription.

Nomi vs Kindroid vs Replika: which should I choose?

Replika is the oldest and by far the most rated of the three, 4.4 from about 228,000 ratings on the US App Store, and its paid plans, sold by the year only, start lower: Plus was $79.99 a year in its in-app paywall on September 30, 2026. Nomi and Kindroid both put more weight on memory and on control over the companion. If you are coming from Replika, compare Nomi and Kindroid on memory first, since that is where they differ most from each other.

Are Nomi and Kindroid safe for work?

Not by design. Nomi says it is built to "remain unfiltered and uncensored", and Kindroid calls itself "a neutrally aligned, unfiltered AI" whose outputs depend on what you put in. Both are rated 18+. You can keep either one platonic, but that is a line you hold yourself. If you want a companion with no adult mode at all, our comparison of safe-for-work companion apps covers the options.

Do Nomi and Kindroid text you first?

Both can. Nomi says its companions can optionally message you after you have been away for a while. Kindroid's away proactive actions, for paid subscribers, let a companion choose between a message, a voice message, a selfie or a call, can take a connected calendar into account, and can even text your real phone number over iMessage or RCS. Kindroid's quiet hours cover calls; for messages you write an instruction such as "do not send messages from 10pm to 8am".
