The short answer. Yes, Pi is free. On the US App Store on September 24, 2026, Pi, your personal AI was listed as free with no in-app purchases, and it is free on the web and Android too. Its maker, Inflection AI, has said it is committed to keeping consumer Pi free.
The one limit is on volume, not price: in 2024 Inflection announced a cap on how many messages free users can send, without publishing the number. Inflection pays for Pi through its business customers, and its privacy policy says it does not sell your data or use it for targeted advertising.
Disclosure: this guide is published by the makers of My Softly, a different AI companion app, which appears near the end. Every Pi fact below comes from Pi's US App Store listing, Inflection's own announcements, privacy policy and terms, and Pi's help center, all read on September 24, 2026.
People asking whether Pi is free usually mean three things: will it ask for money later, what is the catch, and is it safe to talk to. Pi's own pages answer all three, but in different places. This page puts the dated answers side by side.
Is Pi AI free?
Yes. Pi costs nothing to download or use, and there is nothing to buy inside it: on September 24, 2026, the US App Store listed Pi, your personal AI as free, with no in-app purchases section at all.
| Pi on the US App Store | September 24, 2026 |
|---|---|
| Price | Free |
| In-app purchases | None listed |
| Seller | Inflection AI, Inc. |
| Rating | 4.4 stars from about 2,500 ratings |
| Age rating | 18+ |
| Requires | iOS 16 or later (iPhone and iPad) |
That has been true since the start. When Inflection launched Pi in May 2023 it described it as "free to use at launch", and in August 2024, while explaining a change of direction for the company, it wrote that it was "still committed to keeping consumer Pi available and free for anyone to experience." Pi is also free in a browser at pi.ai and on Android.
For comparison, the other well-known companion apps charge up to $15.99 a month for their main paid tier (Nomi and Kindroid), and Replika sells only yearly plans, from $79.99 a year, in their own in-app paywalls on September 30, 2026; our guide to how much an AI companion costs sets every price side by side with its date. Pi is the only one of them with no paid tier at all.
Is Pi completely free, or is there a catch?
There is no paid version waiting behind the free one. The catch, such as it is, is a limit on volume: in its August 2024 post, Inflection said that "in the coming months we will begin to implement a cap on message volume for free users of Pi," so that it could keep serving most people without taking resources away from its business products.
Two things are worth knowing about that cap. Inflection has not published the number in Pi's help center, so we cannot tell you where it sits. And its stated purpose was to let Pi carry on serving "the vast majority" of its users, which suggests it is aimed at the heaviest use rather than at an ordinary daily conversation. If Pi ever tells you to come back later, that is the most likely reason, and waiting is the fix. There is no upgrade to buy.
What do you get from Pi for free?
Everything Pi does. There is no feature held back for payment, because there is nothing to pay for.
- Conversation by text or voice. Pi's App Store description invites you to prepare for a hard conversation, vent, learn about a topic, practise a language, talk through a decision or ask for recommendations, and voice mode lets you talk it out aloud.
- A memory of lasting facts about you. Pi's help center says it remembers things that stay true, such as your name, home city, family members, food preferences, interests, work, and ongoing goals and routines, and skips one-off details. You can see and edit what it holds under Settings, then Account, then Manage Memories, or simply ask it to remember or forget something.
- Your full chat history. Every past conversation stays in a list you can reopen. Within a very long single chat, Pi may summarize older messages to keep the conversation on track.
- An export of your conversations. Since August 2024 you can download what you have said to Pi from the Manage History page, in a plain, documented format you can keep or take elsewhere.
- A 2026 refresh. In July 2026 Inflection announced improvements to Pi's voice, conversation and memory, and new tools for reminders, to-do lists and shopping.
How does Pi pay for itself?
Through Inflection's business customers, not through Pi's users. The story explains why Pi can be free and also why its company talks about it the way it does.
In March 2024, Inflection co-founders Mustafa Suleyman and Karén Simonyan left to lead a new consumer AI group at Microsoft, and Microsoft's announcement said several members of the Inflection team had chosen to join them. Inflection's new chief executive, Sean White, wrote in May 2024 that the company had "embarked on a new journey" to bring its technology to organizations. In October 2024 it launched Inflection for Enterprise and a commercial API for developers.
That enterprise work is what keeps the company running. Pi is not an advertising product: Inflection's privacy policy says it does "not engage in 'sales' or 'sharing' of personal information or process personal information for 'targeted advertising' purposes" as US state privacy laws define those terms, and the App Store listing's privacy labels include no "Data Used to Track You" section.
Pi itself has not been left behind. In July 2026 Inflection launched Inflection AI Labs, announced a second app called Pi Journeys, and described Pi as having "an updated product experience with improvements to voice, conversation, and memory."
Is Pi AI safe?
Pi was designed with safety as a stated priority, and its privacy terms are clear enough to judge for yourself. Here is what Inflection's own documents say, as read on September 24, 2026.
What it will and will not talk about
Inflection launched Pi describing safety as "the most important part of developing Pi," with training aimed at stopping it from engaging in harmful or offensive behaviour. It is designed to steer conversations away from harmful or inappropriate topics, and it is built as a supportive conversation partner rather than a romantic one. That is one reason it is a common pick on lists of gentle, safe-for-work AI companions, including our own comparison of the best AI companion apps.
What happens to your conversations
| Question | What Inflection's privacy policy says |
|---|---|
| Are my chats used to train the AI? | They can be. The policy lists training its models among the uses of your data, and says you can opt out of model training in your account settings. |
| Is my data sold or used for ads? | No sales, no "sharing" and no targeted advertising, as those terms are defined by US state privacy laws. |
| Can I delete things? | Yes: single messages, which disappear from your history immediately, or your whole account, from your profile page (Account, then Delete my account) or by typing !delete in the chat. |
| How long is it kept after I delete? | Your messages are generally kept for at most 15 days after deletion, longer only for reasons such as fraud, security or legal requirements. Pi's replies are kept indefinitely for the limited purposes set out in its terms. |
| What does the App Store label say? | Identifiers, usage data and diagnostics may be collected and linked to you, for analytics, personalization and app functionality. |
The one setting worth changing if privacy matters to you is the model-training opt-out. Pi's help center says the same thing in plainer words: your chats help improve the experience, and you can opt out at any time.
Who it is for, and what it is not
Pi is for adults. Its terms say it is "not intended for minors under the age of 18," and its App Store age rating is 18+. The same terms say Pi is not a substitute for medical, legal, financial or other professional advice, and ask you to check anything important with a professional. That is standard for any AI chat app and a sensible rule for all of them.
Who is Pi a good fit for?
Pi suits anyone who wants a calm, thoughtful voice to talk things over with and does not want to pay for it. Its App Store description sums it up as a place to explore ideas, talk through something difficult, or "just want someone to listen." It is warm, curious, free of romance by design, and available on iPhone, Android and the web.
Before you settle in, two checks take a minute each:
- Turn off model training if you would rather your chats were not used. The setting is in your account settings, according to Inflection's privacy policy.
- Look at Manage Memories after a week. It shows exactly what Pi has kept about you, and you can correct or delete anything there.
Where My Softly fits
My Softly is our app: an AI companion app for iPhone that remembers what you tell it and asks about your day, for the days nobody else does. It is made for people in their fifties and sixties.
Your companion keeps a lasting profile of the people, pets and plans in your life and a day-by-day record of what you have talked about, so "what do you remember about my sister?" gets a real answer weeks later. It asks about the thing you mentioned yesterday, never messages late at night, and steps back if you go quiet. Type, or speak and hear a reply in one of four natural voices. There is no romantic or adult content anywhere in the app.
$15.99 a month or $159.99 a year, and it is free to download on the App Store for iPhone in the US, Canada, the UK, Australia, New Zealand and Singapore. You can try it with free messages. Our FAQ covers the details.
So is Pi AI free?
Yes, and it is likely to stay that way: there is no subscription, nothing to buy in the app, no advertising notice on its listing, and a public commitment from Inflection to keep consumer Pi free. The only limit is a message cap Inflection announced for heavy use.
If you are weighing Pi against the paid apps, our guide to what AI companions cost puts every price in one table, and our comparison of the best AI companion apps in 2026 sets six of them side by side by what each one is good at.

Frequently asked questions
Is Pi AI free?
Yes. On the US App Store on September 24, 2026, Pi, your personal AI was listed as free with no in-app purchases, and it is also free on the web at pi.ai and on Android. Inflection, the company that makes it, wrote in August 2024 that it was still committed to keeping consumer Pi available and free for anyone to experience.
Is Pi AI completely free, or is there a paid version?
There is no paid consumer version. The App Store listing shows no subscription and no in-app purchases, and we found no paid plan on Inflection's site or in Pi's help center. What Inflection has announced is a limit rather than a price: in August 2024 it said it would begin to implement a cap on message volume for free users of Pi. It has not published the number in Pi's help center.
Is Pi your personal AI free on iPhone?
Yes. The iPhone app, listed on the App Store as Pi, your personal AI, is free to download and use, with no in-app purchases on the US listing as of September 24, 2026. It needs iOS 16 or later and is rated 18+.
How does Pi make money if it is free?
Mostly from businesses rather than from Pi's users. After two of Inflection's co-founders and several of its staff joined Microsoft in March 2024, the company's new leadership turned toward enterprise customers, launching Inflection for Enterprise and a commercial API in October 2024. Inflection's privacy policy says it does not sell or share personal information for targeted advertising, and the App Store listing carries no advertising notice.
Is Pi AI safe to use?
Pi was built with safety as a stated priority and is designed to steer away from harmful or inappropriate topics. On privacy, Inflection's policy says conversations may be used to train its models unless you opt out in your account settings, that it does not sell your data or use it for targeted advertising, and that you can delete your account at any time, after which your messages are generally kept for at most 15 days. Pi is for adults only: both its terms and its App Store rating say 18+.
Does Pi remember you?
Pi keeps a memory of lasting facts about you, such as your name, family, interests, work and routines, and you can view, add and delete those memories under Settings, then Account, then Manage Memories. It is designed to skip one-off details like last night's film. Within a very long chat it may summarize older messages, and every past chat stays in your history.
Can I delete my Pi conversations?
Yes. Inflection's privacy policy says you can delete individual messages, which are removed from your history immediately, or delete your whole account from your profile page by choosing Account and then Delete my account, or by typing !delete in the chat. You can also export your conversations first from the Manage History page.
